How Does Your State Score?

How Does Your State Score?

Today’s changing world demands us to push towards more energy-efficient solutions. Among the many major industries with goals of cleaner and greener strategies is heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC). And the HVAC industry faces a greater challenge than most considering “HVAC systems in typical commercial buildings are responsible for more than 40 percent of total energy use,” according to Frost & Sullivan.

Put simply, that means when it comes to saving energy and money, your HVAC equipment is often the best place to start. From complying with building policies and energy programs, to achieving utility rebates and efficiency standards, the HVAC equipment in every building matters.

Many states across the U.S. are actually ramping up their rebates, incentives, and financing services in an effort to support clean energy and high-efficiency projects. In a report last October, the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) said that “state leadership on energy efficiency is more important than ever for ushering in the low-carbon future we need.” The Council published a 50-state Scorecard that ranks the states by energy efficiency, identifying those leading and those lagging behind. Check out how your state scored:

From coast to coast, it’s clear that states are adopting ambitious goals. Even outside of the United States, people across the world are banding together in organizations that create a healthy and sustainable built environment for all. With over 57,000 members from more than 132 nations, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) is one example of an organization that leads people to advance human well-being through sustainable technology. ASHRAE is paving the way by creating minimum energy performance standards and energy codes. Because of their widespread acceptance and challenging compliance requirements, ASHRAE standards are an indispensable reference for engineers and other professionals involved in the design of buildings and building systems. When asked to describe the impact of ASHRAE, Henry “Skip” Ernst, Daikin Applied’s Product Manager of Applied Air Handlers, stated “ASHRAE enables and even funds most of the industry’s key research, constantly pushing the industry forward.” ASHRAE also rewards designs for achieving energy cost levels above the standard minimum, resulting in more efficient buildings and more innovative solutions.

While new solutions often bring new challenges, Skip put it well when he said “there is some danger in trying new things, but the greater danger would be to keep doing things the way we always have.” This mindset sets the pace in a changing world. Daikin remains committed to finding sustainable solutions to lead the industry in the next generation of HVAC technology that improves efficiencies and creates a more sustainable world for all.
