MINNEAPOLIS – January 30, 2017 –– Further demonstrating its mission in driving energy efficiency, Daikin Applied was recently recognized by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Better Buildings, Better Plants® Program. The achievement marks Daikin Applied’s efforts to exceed the department’s challenge to reduce energy intensity by at least 25 percent within 10 years.
Daikin Applied exceeded the original commitment, achieving 35 percent improvement in energy intensity in five years. This improvement was 10 percent above and five years ahead of the program’s schedule.
To accomplish the energy reduction, Daikin Applied converted one of its major energy consumption sources – lighting in its factories and office buildings. The transition to LED lighting was one of the major drivers in reducing energy intensity. Additionally, the company completed a plant expansion at its Owatonna manufacturing site, which also allowed it to bring a second location into the larger facility, which reduced energy use and simplified processes.
“We are proud of this significant achievement and joining the ranks of the Better Plants Program. As a leader in the HVAC industry, we prioritize energy efficiency throughout our entire business, from our product portfolio to our factory floors,” said Kevin Facinelli, Executive Vice President of Operations at Daikin Applied. “We are continually evaluating how we can contribute and lead the industry in environmental responsibility. It’s not just a matter of compliance; we believe it’s the smart way to do business.”
This achievement not only reduced Daikin’s energy intensity but also reduced operating costs and resulted in positive environmental outcomes. Daikin Applied is also the first in the HVAC industry to exceed their U.S. Department of Energy’s Better Buildings, Better Plants Program energy intensity goal.
